Sheng-fu (Larry) Lo, MD, MHS

Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery

Dr. Lo is an Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is also a member of The Spine Hospital at The Neurological Institute of New York and an attending physician at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center.

Dr. Lo received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry in 3 years from Macalester College. He then obtained his medical and master of health science degrees from Yale University School of Medicine, as well the prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute research fellowship. He completed an internship in General Surgery and residency in Neurological Surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and was recognized with the Irving J. Sherman Award for Resident Achievement. Dr. Lo also completed fellowship surgical training in Complex Spine Surgery and Spinal Oncology under Dr. Ziya L. Gokaslan at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Lo’s clinical interests include primary and metastatic tumors of the spinal column, sacral tumors, spinal cord tumors, disorders of spinal alignment and degenerative spine disease. His research focuses on understanding the biology and clinical outcomes of spinal tumors, and new surgical procedures and innovative technology to improve patient safety and spinal fusion. His research has received numerous awards including the Neurosurgery Chairman’s Award for Improving Patient Safety.

Dr. Lo speaks English, Chinese, and Japanese.

Dr. Lo’s office is open from 9-5pm, Monday through Friday. To request an appointment by phone, please call his office at (212) 305-2217. His office coordinator, Priscilla Garcia will take your call. You will be asked to fax (212) 342-6850 or mail your recent imaging (MRI, CAT scan) reports to our office for his review. It is also helpful to include a brief summary of your history and symptoms. Any question regarding insurance or coverage can be answered at that time.

Dr. Lo will review your reports within 24 hours and you will be contacted for an appointment or appropriate referral. Depending on the urgency of your condition, an appointment with Dr. Lo can be made within a few days. To assure that all patients receive a thorough evaluation and the best care in a timely manner, the patient should complete forms regarding their medical history and condition. Dr. Lo welcomes international patients who wish to see him for consultation or treatment. All international appointments with Dr. Lo may be coordinated through Global Services at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
